Special shout out to
! Thank you for upgrading to being a paid subscriber. Shout out also to the anonymous doner to my GoFundMe. Between the two of you, I am able to buy another bale of hay for winter. I am grateful for your support. Thank you so very much.We started off the day here with another loss. The second goatie who was residing here passed away. She started showing signs of being sick yesterday morning and despite antibiotics and medications to help with the fever, it was more than her little body could take. I know she was quite lonely after her sister passed away, and now they are together again, running thru green fields and napping in the shade of a big tree.
They are predicting some pretty bad heat for us today, up to 103 degrees. It’s hazy out now due to the wildfires that are blowing smoke this way. They are anticipating it to clear out this afternoon. Thankfully we do have a breeze blowing and that helps a lot.
We do need rain!!! I ask that you do your rain dances to send it my way please! We have had a few dry thunderstorms pass by and that has set off several small fires in the area. It’s scary dry!
Preparations have been made for the sheep, Brandy horse and the dogs. All the stock tanks are full of nice clean, cold well water. The big main tank is loaded with Gatorade. Lemon/lime this time. The barn is open for whoever wants to nap in there. Everyone is out grazing at the moment, and once their tummy’s are full, they will spend the afternoon sleeping and chewing cud in the shade.
Leo says Hey there, ya got a cookie for me?
Speaking of Brandy horse, she managed to have a bit of a misadventure this week. When she came in Tuesday evening, she had a rather nasty cut on her face. Half way between her nostril and her eye. About 2” long, and open right into the fatty layer under the skin. I’m glad it was not into the muscle. I have no idea what she managed to get herself into. It must either be the barbed wire fence or a fence wire on a post.
We got her all cleaned up, and sprayed so the flies stay off of her. It’s healing well so far. The bit of swelling around the area has gone down, and it has scabbed over nicely. No signs of any infection. We are keeping fly spray on the area. No need to have those nasty things getting in there and making a mess.
Miss Lucy update: She is feeling so much better now. She is even back to her old habit of coming up to the back door and yelling at us until we come out and give her a cookie. Lemon cream this week!
I got my sourdough starter fired up again this week. I’m making a big batch so that I can dry it and have it for sale at the show in August. Decided that last night required biscuits and gravy for dinner, and I dipped into the starter for some fun with that.
I made the Sourdough Butter Swim Biscuits from The Pantry Mama
I must say they are amazingly good! Super easy to make also. I did substitute the sugar for maple syrup in the recipe. It gave it a nice depth of flavor that went great with the sausage gravy.
These biscuits are more cake like than baking powder biscuits. No flaky layers to them. The mouth feel was entirely different from what I am used to. Not that it was bad, just very odd, really.
The Pantry Mama website has loads of great recipes for sourdough. Fall can’t come soon enough for me to try a few more without heating up the house to intolerable levels.
If you would like to purchase some of my starter, please send me a message! It comes freeze dried, and is shelf stable for a very long time. Plus an instruction sheet on how to make it happy again!
Do any of you dear readers have a most excellent peanut butter cookie recipe? I am on the search for a soft cookie, not the crunchy kind. I tried one from allrecipes, and while the cookie was soft-ish and had good flavor, the recipe is a bit of a pain in that the dough is so loose that it did not stick together well for baking.
I’m off to pick another fleece! I wish you all a wonderful week
Blessed Be.
I'm so glad to help!
So good to know that Lucy is feeling better!
