We have a tree.
In that tree is a small door.
It has hinges on the left side and a hook and eye on the right, although the eye is gone now.
When you open the small door, you can see it’s carved into a small cubby hole.
It’s not very deep, only about 2.5-3”. Not tall either, just about 4.5”.
I have long wondered what the purpose of this door and cubby are.
Was this where the original owner of the ranch hid his bottle of whiskey from his wife?
Were there two teenagers from different ranches leaving love notes for each other?
Was someone extremely bored while watching the cows and just decided to create some entertainment for themselves?
Was there some other reason for this cupboard in the trees?
A bit of history of our place. The original house was built in 1912, and it was a small dairy farm, plus they raised some pigs here too. My fiber studio was the milk processing house, and the other building, we call it the bunk house, was actually where they were running cows in and out for milking.
The original cistern, windmill, grey water run off hole, and outhouse are still here.
The main house, which has been added onto over time, had no electricity. You can tell the old parts of the house from the new ones by where the electric outlets are located. When they got electricity, they wired the house from the top down, so the outlets are half way up the walls instead of down by the baseboards. The only original main room that was changed is the living room. When they remodeled that room they moved them down.
The inside walls are all tongue and groove board all the way down. You can hang a picture anywhere and hit wood with your nail. I have a piece of the kitchens wallpaper that I want to frame and hang back in the kitchen.
You can see bits of history all around the place, from their cattle brand in the concrete, to a little girls shoe prints in another section of the sidewalk, to the initials carved into the seat of the outhouse by a child doing their business. I bet that made mom happy.
Back to our hole in the tree….What do you think the purpose of it was? Share your imaginative thoughts in the comments and lets see what kind of ideas we can come up with.

Tally abscess update….The lump is very much smaller and not draining anything at the moment. Unfortunately, he looks like he got something in his eye and now has an eye infection. He is getting antibiotic eye ointment 2-3 times a day to clear that up. One good thing too, he’s putting some weight back on. He was pretty skinny looking after shearing, so we wanted to fatten him back up. I’m giving him decoxx also, which is a medication for coccidiosis which I know I have in the flock. Next step is to give him a dose of wormer, but one problem at a time!

Love the mystery tree box! I’m guessing it did not hurt the tree since it is a small opening? I’d like to make one of my own to pass notes or flask only if the tree approved 😊
So glad that Tally is doing better! The tree cubby...I haven't A clue! Love you!!!
