It sure feels as though fall has arrived this weekend. A pretty big cold front has come in, leaving us with cool temps, 50 degrees right now, grey skies and rain. The kind of weather that makes the knees ache. A reminder that winter will soon be here.
Still, I didn’t quite need a coat for morning chores. The flannel shirt is still enough for the moment. The boy child and I did some maintenance on the guardian dogs this morning, toe and dew claw trimming was our goal, and we got all but one dog done. Athena is tough to catch, even with treats, and she eluded our efforts this morning. She’s pretty people shy after we had to doctor her snake bite and subsequent infection. I don’t blame her, I don’t much like doctors either for various other reasons. We will catch up with her sometime this week and get that job done.
Sheep feet will be the next great adventure!
All this colder, wet weather is making the desire for soup hit me strong. Home made vegetable beef barley was last night’s choice to take with me to work. So yummy!!! I love the nutty flavor barley gives the beef.
Here’s a link to one of my favorite quick soups. Even though it was written for that specific blender, it can be made on the stove top, and there are instructions for that part with the recipe.
I am also looking forward to making corn chowder, beef stew, chicken and dumplings, and pairing those with sourdough bread, biscuits, or cornbread. I never did meet a carb I didn’t love LOL!
Since there are no other big outside projects to deal with today, I think i’ll work some more on the circular sock machine. This is a new device to me and i’m still trying to work out the tension issues, dropped stitch issues, missed stitch issues etc, etc, etc. Some day I may actually produce a wearable sock! The machine is 100 year old LeGare 400 that I had to do some fixing up to get it to run. I do love those old machines. The history and all the hands before mine that lovingly made socks for their families, or to bring income into their homes touches my heart. Wtih a very few exceptions, all my fiber equipment is vintage or antique, and I would not have it any other way. A connection to the ancestors.
I hope your weekend is enjoyable and all that you want it to be!
Blessed Be!
Good morning-ish to my friend in Carbs! Chicken and dumplings, yummy. Now you have me thinking fall soup/chowder/potatoey foods. I was hungry after work Thursday and the cupboard had cans: hominy, Stokes Green chili with pork and diced tomatoes. Guess what I'll be dining on for the next week ;-) Enjoy your weekend!!!
Mmmmm! Beef and Barley soup with a fat slice of your amazing sourdough rye! Slathered with butter of course!
