Howdy readers! Back as promised! Thank you for all your kind messages and your understanding that I needed a bit of a break. I appreciate you all so very much!
A big welcome to the new subscribers, you’re just in time for the biggest day of the sheep year.
Good news…..I found a shearer!
Bad news…..I only have a few days to get ready.
As it stands right now it will either be Thursday, Friday or Saturday. They need to find a farm sitter for one of those days since their farm operation is calving right now. I am waiting for the definitive day as I write. Fingers crossed for Friday or Saturday to give me a few more days to get ready.
And for the sheep to dry off. We got snow this weekend and they are a bit wet. Not as bad as if it had been rain, but they are damp. I am leaving them out today and tomorrow since it’s supposed to be sunny with a breeze and I hope it will be enough to get them dry.
You can’t shear wet sheep.
Michael did a bunch of work on Sunday to set up the two pens we need in the barn. I spent time out there this morning to get more done and it is about 90% ready to run the sheep in tomorrow night. I have to drag two more panels in to finish the second pen which I’ll get done this afternoon. Need to get the tarps up there too, they help to keep the fleece clean as they hit the ground. I’ll have Michael help me when he gets home today to get the skirting table set up.
I’m also planning the food menu at the moment. I have a nice ham now thawing on my counter. Since I don’t think I’ll be able to round up many helpers for this, I think one ham will be enough. Laurette is going to be up early to help get things ready and she mentioned potato salad and veggies. I’ll be getting some nice bread (no time to bake this week), soda, chips and a few other things at the store. This is usually a pot luck party here.
Guess I should clean up the house too, UGH!!! LOL!
I need to get my butt in gear here, I suspect you won’t see much of me this week, so next week should have a run-down of how shearing day went.
Blessed Be!!
All the best for the shearing!
Curious why you don’t shear them yourself--or is this a helper you hired?
And got a kick out of learning it takes so long for a sheep to dry!
